Hertha BSC enters League of Legends eSports

Hertha BSC is another German football club expanding its eSports portfolio. The capital city club will gain a foothold in the country’s second highest League of Legends league

FIFA eSports are now not the only additional mainstay among renowned clubs in the football world. League of Legends (LoL) inspires masses of fans all over the world. Accordingly, clubs from Germany are also seizing the opportunity and setting up their own LoL teams.

Next to Eintracht Frankfurt, FC Schalke 04 and 1860 Munich, another football heavyweight now finds itself in LoL-eSport. Hertha BSC Berlin today announced its official entry into Division II of the Strauss Prime League. The goals are clear: to make it to the first division as quickly as possible.

Mix of veterans and talent

The eSports department of the Berlin team says it wants to “challenge and promote” players in League of Legends from now on – just like in eFootball. In addition, they will compete with a mix of “veterans of the scene as well as promising talents” in order to “make the leap to Division I.”

Gaming was once considered an unhealthy waste of time, but those days are long gone. The industry is changing and Hertha also emphasises that there is more behind the effort than mere prestige, according to the motto “The main thing is to be there.”

The “old lady” attaches importance to the fact that the League of Legends team also focuses on “topics such as fitness, nutrition and sports psychology at the highest level”. The league kicks off on 24 January.
