Game of Tears: Standing ovation for Ranieri

Claudio Ranieri watched Roma reach the Conference League final as a spectator – and a particularly emotional one at that.

Until January, Claudio Ranieri still coached Watford FC, but the 70-year-old is currently without a club. Which is why he was able to watch the Conference League semi-final of two of his former employers in civilian clothes, on Thursday evening at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Roma, coached by José Mourinho, prevailed in the end to advance to the final against Feyenoord Rotterdam, which even moved “The Special One” to tears on the sidelines. And Ranieri’s eyes were not dry either during the Giallorossi’s 1-0 victory.

When the legendary coach was shown on the stadium screen, both the Rome and Leicester supporters stood up in unison and applauded the man who coached Roma between 2009 and 2011, as well as in 2019, and led the Foxes to their sensational championship in 2016. Ranieri then also rose briefly, waved and even shed a few tears.
