Franz Wagner confirms participation in European Championships this summer

Basketball star Franz Wagner has confirmed his participation in the European Championships with the German national team.

“That’s the plan,” said the Orlando Magic NBA pro on Johannes B. Kerner’s talk show “Bestbesetzung” (MagentaTV+). Wagner said he is very much looking forward to the tournament in Finland, Poland, Cyprus, and Latvia (August 27 to September 14).

After being eliminated from the NBA playoffs with Orlando, Wagner (23), who was an important part of the 2023 world championship team alongside his brother Moritz (28), had left his participation open. “There will be a discussion,” he said at the time. However, Wagner also reiterated that he loves “playing for my country, I love the guys I play with there.”

Moritz Wagner, on the other hand, will miss the European Championships after tearing his cruciate ligament at the end of 2024. “I think even if Moritz can’t play this year, we still have a really good team,” said his younger brother Franz. “Mo” Wagner had already ruled out playing for his country this year at the beginning of the year.

In addition to the World Cup title, both had already won bronze with the DBB team at the 2022 European Championships on home soil. At the Olympic Games in Paris, the German team missed out on a medal in the bronze medal match.
