The first major transfer of the summer, including a princely transfer fee, is in the bag: Matheus Cunha is joining Manchester United for almost €75 million.
Matheus Cunha joined RB Leipzig for €15 million in the summer of 2018. A year and a half later, the Brazilian moved to Hertha BSC for €20 million, then to Atlético Madrid for €35 million a year and a half later, and finally to Wolverhampton Wanderers for around €50 million in the summer of 2023. Now his next move is imminent – and once again he is breaking his personal transfer record.
On Sunday, Manchester United announced the signing of the 26-year-old striker, for whom the Red Devils activated the release clause in his contract with Wolves. The latter will receive the equivalent of around €74 million.
Matheus Cunha: The Wolves’ top scorer
Wolverhampton celebrated staying in the Premier League in the 2024/25 season thanks in part to Matheus Cunha’s 15 goals in 33 appearances – he missed several games due to two suspensions for violent conduct – making him the team’s top scorer. In his two years with Wolves, the Brazilian international scored 29 goals in 82 Premier League appearances. In the Bundesliga, he scored 14 goals in 74 appearances for Leipzig and Hertha.
At Wolves, Matheus Cunha mostly played as a left winger in a 3-4-3 formation, but in many situations he moved inside to become a second number 10. He is likely to play a similar role under Ruben Amorim in Manchester, who also favors a 3-4-3 formation.
