Manchester United did not play well at Craven Cottage, but still managed to come away with a lucky point in the end. Fulham FC, meanwhile, missed out on their first win.
Following a 0–1 derby defeat to Man City and a 2–3 League Cup exit against Brighton, Man United needed to show the right response. Confidence hadn’t been particularly high among their opponents Fulham either, who went into the match bottom of the table despite a 0–0 draw at Liverpool and a 3–2 win in the League Cup at West Ham United.
The Cottagers, who had picked up just one point in the league prior to this, were able to rely throughout on goalkeeper Leno on early Sunday evening, who went on to make a total of five saves. The German demonstrated his class for the first time against Martinez after just ten minutes.
Whilst both teams initially lacked control, the spectators were at least treated to a few noteworthy attacking moves before half-time. Fulham repeatedly posed a threat through the lively King (20th, 28th, 32nd minutes), whilst United hit the post twice through Bruno Fernandes (25th minute) and Matheus Cunha (31st minute). Nevertheless, the teams went into the break goalless.
Martinez scores an own goal – late equaliser
After the restart, it took a while before Álvaro Arbeloa’s side not only threatened once more but actually took the lead. Lammens parried a powerful shot from Bassey forwards, catching his team-mate Martinez off guard, who deflected the ball into his own net. United’s goalkeeper tried to clear with his foot but was too late (62′).
Overall, it was a lacklustre performance from the Red Devils, who did at least step up their attacking efforts somewhat following the goal they conceded. Whenever they did create danger, however, there was no getting past Leno, who was also on hand to deny Mbeumo (67’) and Matheus Cunha (74’).
Michael Carrick hoped to inject fresh impetus with three substitutes, bringing on Zirkzee (77’), Mount (80’) and Dorgu (84’) from the bench. The hoped-for late equaliser, however, came from Matheus Cunha, whose right-footed shot was decisively deflected by Fulham defender Affengruber, leaving Leno with no chance (88’).
Thus, the visitors – who face Tottenham after the international break (10 October, 6.30 pm) – at least secured a point in West London. Fulham, meanwhile, must continue to wait for their first league win and travel to Ipswich in two weeks’ time (10 October, 4 pm).
