After ten years, Kevin De Bruyne’s chapter at Manchester City came to an end this summer. Now the Belgian is moving to Italy, more specifically to Naples.
Kevin De Bruyne’s era at Manchester City is coming to an end this summer after a total of ten years, during which the midfielder won six English championships and the Champions League title in 2023, among other honors. The Belgian’s contract expired, and the Skyblues’ management decided against renewing it.
This came as a surprise to De Bruyne himself, who was “a little shocked and surprised.” He believes “that I still have a lot to offer. I am aware that I am no longer 25, but I can still do my job.”
Not only he, but other clubs are also convinced of this. After the announcement of his departure from Manchester, MLS clubs Inter Miami and Chicago Fire initially entered the fray, but De Bruyne preferred a move within Europe.
SSC Napoli took advantage of this situation: the newly crowned Italian champions announced De Bruyne’s signing on Thursday. “Kevin is proud to be one of us,” the club wrote on its social media channels, and president Aurelio Di Laurentiis also posted a picture of himself shaking hands with the Belgian.
United with Lukaku
The city at the foot of Mount Vesuvius is De Bruyne’s first stop in Italy. He previously played in his native Belgium, for Chelsea FC, in Germany for Bremen and Wolfsburg, and finally in Manchester from 2015.
At SSC, De Bruyne will be reunited with his long-time national team colleague Romelu Lukaku, who played a major role in the club’s fourth league title with 14 goals.
