FIFA 22: Silver Stars controversy divides the FUT community

Originally intended as a stopgap, the Silver Stars are currently stirring up debate in the FUT community – and causing extreme opinions.

Most FIFA 22 Ultimate Team (FUT) players were probably surprised when the first leakers predicted a Silver Stars promo at the beginning of last week. The 74-overall-rated special cards are usually only released sporadically as part of the Team of the Week (TOTW).

Since Friday, however, new Silver Stars items have been appearing daily – albeit not in packs, but via tasks and Squad Building Challenges (SBCs). Even EA SPORTS doesn’t seem to have believed in the popularity of the promo, otherwise the developer would hardly have omitted the integration into the packs.

Throttled at 74 points

The Silver Stars cannot compete with the great overall ratings of Team of the Year (TOTY), Future Stars or Road to the Final (RTTF). As mentioned, they are throttled at 74 points, but some of the individual attributes are much stronger – which makes some cards actually playable even in March.

More fascinating than the gap-filling event itself, however, is the community’s view of the Silver Stars. For the well-known leaker and content creator ‘FUTZone’, for example, it is the “worst promo ever”. Quite a few other FUT supporters and players agree with him in this assessment.

Elanga stronger than Mbappé?

Other fans think the Silver Stars are even better than the TOTY, at least that’s the Twitter opinion of user ‘Declan’. More moderate voices say that the promo is quite nice, but would have had a much greater impact on the meta in the early stages of the FUT 22 season.

The comparison made by ‘Dan – FIFA Trader’ seems completely crazy: Manchester United talent Anthony Elanga’s Silver Stars card is stronger than Kylian Mbappé’s TOTY property, he says. “And it’s not even close,” adds the user, who after all has more than 30,000 Twitter followers around him.

The invisible quality

For context, Elanga’s Silver Stars card has an overall rating of 74, while Mbappé’s TOTY property boasts 97 points. The Frenchman also leaves the Swede behind on paper in every single basic value – often by a long way. Another indication that what is written is not always what is inside.

The community had already come to this realisation months ago with Mbappé’s PSG colleague Presnel Kimpembe. The central defender was almost invincible, although his pure stats did not stand out from other defenders. Kimpembe’s removal from FUT was even called for via petition.

Anecdote with déjà vu factor

Fans won’t be divided over the Silver Stars for too much longer, with the end of the promo already awaiting them on Friday. After that, the special cards will probably be just another FUT anecdote – but one that could still be remembered at some FIFA 22 Global Series (FGS) tournaments
