The Italian public prosecutor’s office has charged eleven clubs of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) with overstating the value of their players. Among the accused are well-known clubs such as Juventus or Napoli.

The clubs, five of which play in Serie A, had recorded much higher capital gains and performance entitlements for players in their financial reports than was permitted under applicable calculation rules, the FIGC announced on Friday evening. In addition, law enforcement said it indicted 61 suspects, including managers and directors of the clubs.

According to the prosecution, Serie A clubs Juventus Torino, SSC Napoli, CFC Genoa, FC Empoli and Sampdoria Genoa are affected. The remaining clubs play in the second division Serie B or lower. Sampdoria Genoa commented on the case in a statement. The club had always acted in accordance with the applicable laws and norms, it said on Friday.

According to the “Gazzetta dello Sport”, the case will end up in court. The accused must expect a fine. If the managers are found guilty, they will face a ban.
