“Experienced a lot”: Jorge Meré leaves Cologne for Mexico City

Jorge Meré will no longer play for 1. FC Köln. In order to take on a more supporting role again, the 24-year-old is bidding farewell to Mexico, while Noah Katterbach is making a transitional move to Basel.

In 2018, he was part of Cologne’s relegation to the second division, he helped FC return to the Bundesliga after just one year – and he played almost a hundred competitive games for the Geißböcke: After four and a half eventful years, Jorge Meré is leaving 1. FC Köln.

“It’s not the first time we’ve talked about a move with him,” said sporting director Jörg Jakobs, calling Meré’s move to Mexico “understandable” – after all, he no longer gets to play to the extent that he would like to.

Meré has only featured eight times this Bundesliga season – a number that runs counter to the defender’s expectations. “My ambition is to always play, which is why I have now decided to take on a new challenge,” said the 24-year-old.

In all these years, he has “experienced a lot” and “always felt very comfortable” – but now it is time for a new task. This will take Jorge Meré to Mexico City, while Noah Katterbach will move to Basel on loan.

Katterbach seeks playing practice in Switzerland

The Cologne homegrown has only managed 15 minutes of action in the first 19 Bundesliga matchdays and is therefore expected to gain match practice in Switzerland in order to, as Jakobs said, “continue his promising path in professional football”.
