Ex-Bremer Junuzovic ends his career

Zlatko Junuzovic ends his career as an active player. The 34-year-old, known in the Bundesliga from his days at Werder Bremen, will work as co-trainer at FC Liefering with immediate effect.

The guesswork has come to an end: Zlatko Junuzovic is ending his career as an active player and will work as co-coach of second-division club FC Liefering with immediate effect. The announcement was made by Austrian serial champions Red Bull Salzburg, for whom Junuzovic played since 2018, early on Friday evening.

“Together with my family, I have thought long and hard about what is best for our future. It is not with a light heart, but full of anticipation, that I have now made the decision to end my career as a professional footballer,” explained the 34-year-old.

597 competitive games for Junuzovic

The 34-year-old played 597 competitive games at club and international level during his career and won eight titles with Salzburg. Junuzovic also played for SV Werder Bremen from 2012 to 2018, before which he laced up his boots for Austria Wien and GAK, among others. The likeable midfielder left a lasting impression on the Weser, even leading the Green-Whites onto the pitch as captain at times. In 188 Bundesliga games, the Austrian, who was known for his free kicks, scored 21 goals.

Now, however, Junuzovic is turning to a new challenge with the co-coaching engagement at Liefering: “I have had so many good experiences here in Salzburg, both athletically and personally, that I want to take advantage of the professional opportunity in this great environment. I’m looking forward to this new phase in my life. “
