European Championships: German judoka win bronze in mixed competition

This was the third medal for the German Judo Federation (DJB)

The German judoka won another medal on the final day of the European Championships in Zagreb: In the mixed competition, the team secured bronze against Italy on Sunday. It was the third medal for the German Judo Federation (DJB).

In the mixed competition, Germany, consisting of Jana Ziegler, Johann Lenz, Renee Lucht, Samira Bock, Anna Monta Olek, Jano Ruebo and Johannes Frey, reached the semi-finals after beating Serbia, but were defeated by France.

On Saturday, Anna-Maria Wagner and Alina Böhm secured the first medals for Germany in the 78 kilogram weight category. Wagner won silver after being beaten by France’s Audrey Tcheumeo in the final. Böhm was delighted to take bronze, having previously also been defeated by Tcheumeo.

“My mission was to defend my title. I didn’t succeed, but I’m still over the moon with bronze,” said Böhm about her performance. She had won the European title in each of the past two years

The results of the European Championships are also important with regard to Olympic qualification. However, the starting places will not be decided until the World Championships in Abu Dhabi (May 19-24). In the women’s competition, Wagner and Böhm will be fighting for a German starting place for the Games in Paris in the up to 78 kilo category.
