Eight months after cardiac arrest: Eriksen back on the pitch

Around eight months after his cardiac arrest at the 2021 European Championship finals, Christian Eriksen has made his comeback – in Brentford FC’s test match against Sixth Division side Southend United.

Since 31 January 2022, Eriksen has been under contract with Brentford, and now he has also played his first game for them. It was also his first match since the European Championship match between Denmark and Finland on 12 June 2021. In his new club’s 3-2 win over Southend United, the Dane was on the pitch for 60 minutes and set up a goal. Eriksen’s contract with the Premier League club runs until the end of the season.

Prior to that, he had to undergo an extensive medical examination in order to receive permission to play in England. As a result, Eriksen now plays with a defibrillator, which was implanted in him following his collapse with cardiac arrest. The Dane was unable to continue his career at his previous club Inter Milan in Italy because Italian regulations prohibit the use of players with implanted pacemakers for health protection reasons.

It will be some time before Eriksen is able to play for Brentford in the Premier League, however. Only last Thursday, the attacking player had stated that he still needed “a few weeks” for this. In regular playing time, the 109-time international still wants to recommend himself for a place in the Danish World Cup squad.
