Due to power outage: Tennis matches in Madrid canceled

The massive power outage across large parts of Spain has also affected the tennis tournament in Madrid. All remaining matches for the day and night have been canceled, among other things for safety reasons, as the organizers announced on the X platform.

The match between Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov and Britain’s Jacob Fearnley was interrupted at 6:4, 5:4. The cable camera, known as the Spider Cam, remained suspended directly above Centre Court.

In addition, the electronic line-calling system was no longer working: there are no line judges at the Masters 1000 tournament; instead, an electronic system checks whether a ball is in or out.

American Coco Gauff also felt the effects. The 21-year-old was being interviewed after her victory over Belinda Bencic from Switzerland when the microphone stopped working due to the power outage. According to the men’s organization ATP, two singles and one doubles match were in progress at the time of the power outage. Sales stands and food stalls at the Caja Magica facility were also suddenly without power.

Sky shows Zverev

During the interruption, German pay-TV broadcaster Sky showed replays of Alexander Zverev’s match against Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Germany’s top player had won the match in three sets on Sunday.

The causes of the massive power outage, which affected Spain, Portugal, and France, were initially unclear.
