CONCACAF: Davies the first Canadian to be named “Player of the Year”

Bayern professional Alphonso Davies (21) has become the first Canadian to be named CONCACAF’s “Player of the Year”.

The 21-year-old FC Bayern full-back played a big part in his home country’s first World Cup qualification since 1986, even though he was only able to watch the decisive game on TV.

“I’m delighted to receive this award, football brings joy, football brings happiness and football shows you the world,” said Davies, who scored five goals and provided eight assists in 13 games in the 2021 World Cup qualifiers. Davies had been forced to take a break since mid-January because of heart muscle inflammation following a previous Corona infection.

In the women’s competition, the Continental Confederation has selected Crystal Dunn from the USA since 2013. Coaches and players from 41 member associations as well as media representatives and fans vote in the election.
