“Virtually out of reach” for FC Twente, but a dream come true for Wout Weghorst: The Dutch national team player is leaving Ajax Amsterdam and has signed a contract in Enschede. And for good reason.
Wout Weghorst proudly presents his new No. 9 jersey after the 33-year-old signed a contract with FC Twente. His contract with Ajax had expired, and the forward has now signed a two-year deal in Enschede—fulfilling a long-held wish.
So there’s reason to celebrate for the most experienced striker on the Dutch national team—though he was the only one of the seven forwards not to see action in the Oranje’s three World Cup matches so far. For Weghorst, “the circle is complete,” as he is now joining the club with which, as a young fan, he was able to “celebrate cup victories at ‘De Kuip’ in 2001 and 2011,” and “in 2010, I was standing on the ‘Oude Markt’ when FC Twente won the league title.”
For Weghorst, who made his mark in Germany with 70 goals in 144 games for Wolfsburg and seven goals in 30 games for TSG Hoffenheim, “many soccer dreams had already come true, but one remained unfulfilled…”—a dream Weghorst can now put to rest with his move to Twente. “ Starting next season, I’ll give it my all so that this time I can celebrate successes with FC Twente not as a fan, but as a player.”

Incidentally, the technical director is former Leverkusen coach Erik ten Hag. And he is “incredibly proud that Wout Weghorst will be playing for FC Twente in the future. Who wouldn’t be, when a striker from the Dutch national team with more than fifty international caps joins your club? This transfer is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us,” explained the 56-year-old. “A player with such an impressive track record is normally out of reach for FC Twente.” But starting next season, it will be a reality.
