“Climate of mistrust”: Spanish association reacts to Real’s urgent letter

At Real Madrid, anger at the referees is greater than ever. The system is ‘corrupt,’ the royal family said. The Spanish association has now reacted.

The 0-1 defeat at Espanyol was the last straw from Real’s point of view. First, Carlos Romero only saw yellow instead of red after a rough tackle on Kylian Mbappé, and the VAR did not see fit to intervene. Romero would later score the only goal of the game. Added to that was the annoyance over the disallowed goal by Vinicius Junior, which had been preceded by a push from Mbappé to the defender.

The club reacted to the decisions with a four-page letter to the Spanish Football Association titled “Formal Protest Against the Refereeing System”, which was also published on the Real Madrid website on Monday evening. It called for a “complete” reform, saying the system had “proven to be corrupt from within”.

The events would exceed “any scope for human error or referee interpretation,” wrote Real’s secretary of the board of directors, José Luis del Valle Perez: “What happened there represents the culmination of a completely discredited refereeing system, in which decisions against Real Madrid have reached a level of manipulation and manipulation of the competition that cannot be ignored.” The system is “designed to protect itself,” it continued.

In addition to a reform for the future, Real demanded “in view of the seriousness of the facts” to gain insight into the VAR communication of the two key actions.

According to the Marca, the referees feel “left alone and at an impasse. Some of them are toying with the idea of protesting against what they feel is total and absolute defencelessness.”

Real’s repeated claims of being disadvantaged by the referees are based on the “Negreira case”. Barcelona is accused of having paid around €7.3 million to the company of former refereeing chief José Maria Enriquez Negreira between 2001 and 2018. According to the public prosecutor, the Catalans are said to have paid for refereeing decisions in their favor. The club, on the other hand, claims that it only transferred the sum for reports and advice. A precise verdict is still pending.

But the current referees are no longer active for the most part and feel that they are being held collectively responsible. But that doesn’t stop Real from repeatedly drawing attention to alleged refereeing mistakes, mostly on the club’s own Real Madrid TV.

League president Javier Tebas, who is in a constant feud with Real president Florentino Perez, also spoke on platform X. He said he was “not at all” surprised by the letter. He said a reform was discussed and voted on at a La Liga meeting on April 19, 2023 – “and Real Madrid was against it.”
