British boxing star Anthony Joshua wants to give it another go and take on his biggest rivals
British boxing star Anthony Joshua wants to give it another go and take on his biggest rivals. As the 34-year-old explained in an interview with “Men’s Health”, he is aiming for a fight against Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder in order to return to the top of the boxing world. Joshua has already been world heavyweight champion twice, but has lost three of his last seven fights.
After that, his ego suffered the most. “Only after a defeat does it become clear whether you are mentally fit,” said the London 2012 Olympic super heavyweight champion. Joshua had won all of his professional fights up until 2019. Then he was surprisingly defeated by US American Andy Ruiz Jr.
It took him almost a year to come to terms with this unfamiliar situation. Afterwards, Joshua also relied on psychological support in training. “As I was no longer champion, I was no longer under so much pressure. That’s why I was able to work on my weaknesses,” he said: “Since then, I’ve not only been working on my body, but also on my mind.”
The mental preparation leads Joshua to a clear resolution: “Before the fight, there is no option in my head not to knock out my opponent. “
When and whether a duel with Fury or Wilder will take place is not yet certain. Joshua won his last fight in August 2023 against Robert Helenius by knockout in the seventh round – it was his 29th career win and 23rd by knockout
