Back problems too severe: Ter Stegen needs an operation

German international goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has to go under the knife because his back problems are too severe. This was officially announced by his home club FC Barcelona

Marc-André ter Stegen has officially been out of action since November 17. The 38-time German international keeper did not even make an appearance for the national team at the time, with the 31-year-old goalkeeper suffering from back problems.

At the beginning of December, the injury had probably not changed much. Because ter Stegen, who has since been voted the best player of the 2022/23 La Liga season, has to go under the knife. FC Barcelona made the official announcement on Tuesday evening. There was already speculation about this in Spain on Monday

The year 2023 should be over for ter Stegen

The statement says that ter Stegen will undergo surgery later this week “to fix his lower back problems”. It is not yet known how long the former Gladbach player will miss. However, the year should be over for ter Stegen

At least Spanish champions Barcelona, who promise “a new statement after the operation”, can currently also rely on their second goalkeeper Inaki Pena. The 24-year-old has deputized for ter Stegen three times in a row recently, with the Spaniard excelling in the 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Coach Xavi will be hoping that his protégé will once again be “at his best”, and not just in the top game against FC Girona on Sunday (9pm). Barça have a whopping seven games coming up between now and mid-January.
