Back number matches contract length: Bayern extends contract with Ulreich

After being officially without a club for just under a month, Sven Ulreich has signed a new one-year contract with FC Bayern.

Sven Ulreich will wear his contract term on his back in future: the FC Bayern substitute goalkeeper, who has worn the number 26 since 2021, is now under contract with the German champions until 2026. As the Munich club announced on Tuesday, Ulreich, whose contract officially expired on June 30, has been given a new one-year deal. The goalkeeper was not in the squad for the Club World Cup in June.

“Sven Ulreich is reliability personified: he keeps his promises – in the truest sense of the word,” Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl is quoted as saying in the club’s statement. “Characters like him are good for any team. We are very happy to have him with us for another season.”

Ulreich will therefore start the coming season as number 3 behind Manuel Neuer and Jonas Urbig, after Daniel Peretz was loaned to Hamburger SV for a year and Alexander Nübel continues to play for VfB Stuttgart, also on loan. The 36-year-old gave up his job as VfB Stuttgart’s first-choice goalkeeper in the summer of 2015 to move to Munich as Manuel Neuer’s backup. He has held this position ever since, apart from a one-year interlude at Hamburger SV in the 2020/21 season.

Ulreich made a total of 103 competitive appearances for FC Bayern during this time, winning nine league titles and the Champions League in 2020. He made two appearances in the past season: In the Champions League, he replaced Neuer, who was injured at half-time, in the 9-2 win against Dinamo Zagreb, and the following weekend he played the full 90 minutes in the 5-0 win over Werder Bremen. After Urbig’s signing in the winter transfer window, Ulreich moved down to third choice and only made one more appearance in the Bundesliga squad.
