The German was defeated in two sets by Chilean Nicolás Jarry.
Daniel Altmaier is the first German tennis pro to be eliminated from the ATP Masters in Madrid. The 26-year-old from Kempen lost in the opening round to Chilean Nicolás Jarry, who is ranked 57th in the world, ten places higher than Altmaier. The score was 3:6, 2:6 after a disappointing performance from the German qualifier.
At the Masters in Monte Carlo at the start of the clay court season, Altmaier had fought his way into the round of 16, where he was only defeated by top star Carlos Alcaraz, who is not competing in Madrid due to injury. Against Jarry, Altmaier couldn’t find his game from the start and had no answer to his strong forehand shots and hard serves.
Germany’s number one Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) is the top seed in the tournament and will not enter the action until Friday in the second round. He will face the experienced Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut (37). Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) will play his first-round match against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp on Thursday.
