After stadium tragedy: Police chief dismissed, several suspensions

The stadium disaster in Java has led to the first personnel consequences. The German coach Thomas Doll, who works in Indonesia, offers his team psychological support.

At least 125 people died in the mass panic at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang. National police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo told a press conference on Monday that Malang city police chief Ferli Hidayat has been relieved of his duties.

In addition, nine officers have been suspended, Prasetyo said. At least 28 other police officers were being investigated for alleged breaches of professional ethics, he added. “We are working quickly but with caution,” Prasetyo said. The announcement came after the Jakarta government called a special meeting with senior security officials on Monday and then ordered the appointment of an independent team of experts to investigate the background.

Doll wants to offer psychological help to his players.

Meanwhile, Thomas Doll wants to offer psychological support to his players. The German coach is currently coaching first division side Persija Jakarta. “We will train again for the first time on Tuesday and ask the players if they would like a psychologist,” the former Bundesliga coach was quoted as saying in Bild.

“I am unspeakably sad about what happened. I have already had the first talks with my players about it. They are all understandably very concerned. This has nothing to do with football any more. It all makes me very, very thoughtful,” said the former national player.

Former Bundesliga professional Hanno Behrens also plays for Persija Jakarta.
