After a weak start: Bayern turn around final against Ulm and defend BBL Cup title

In their own arena, FC Bayern won the BBL Cup by beating champions ratiopharm Ulm in the final and successfully defending their title

Top favorite Bayern Munich has won the German Basketball League Cup, defending its title from the previous year. The league leaders beat German champions ratiopharm Ulm 81:65 (35:28) in the final at home in BMW Park on Sunday to win their first title of the season – and at the same time give their new coach Pablo Laso his first title at his first attempt. For starting coach Laso, who has been on the sidelines in Munich since this season, it was his first title abroad after 22 titles with Real Madrid.

Francisco and Obst score diligently

In front of 6,500 spectators, including world champion captain Dennis Schröder, Sylvain Francisco was Munich’s best scorer with 17 points, followed by international Andreas Obst (13).

Bayern had easily defeated Bamberg Baskets 81:62 (48:32) in the semi-final on Saturday. Ulm had to fight much harder in the second semi-final to defeat Alba Berlin 87:79 (42:40).

Ulm got off to the better start in the final and were clearly ahead after the first quarter (18:9). However, Bayern then stepped up their game in front of Honorary President Uli Hoeneß and turned the game around before the break. The home side scored 14 points in succession before Ulm scored again, but ultimately had to concede a clear defeat. Munich is now unbeaten in 14 games at home
