A comeback for esports? FM27 gets a new draft mode

On Thursday evening, Sports Interactive gave fans a closer look at FM27 during a livestream. A completely new game mode was also unveiled. This could be a sign of things to come for esports.

In fact, the competitive debut on the big stage had been a success. The first FIFAe World Cup of Football Manager proved a hit in the summer of 2024. Not only did participants from all over the world deliver top-class gameplay, but the competition’s presentation – featuring regular press conferences and staged PR photos – also provided plenty of entertainment.

The fact that there has been no further comparable competition since then, despite the partnership between FIFA and Football Manager, is down to other reasons. One in particular: developer Sports Interactive’s (SI) switch to the Unity Engine. A mammoth project that proved so overwhelming for SI that FM25 was never even released. Before FM26 was released, it suffered from massive teething problems that it never quite shook off.

Release stream reveals Shuffle Draft

But now, over two years after Germany’s World Cup runners-up finish in Liverpool, FM27 is hinting at a possible eSports comeback. This is because, as SI surprisingly revealed in a release stream on Thursday evening, the upcoming instalment will feature a new game mode called Shuffle Draft.

According to Senior Community Manager Chris Groves, this mode is set to offer “online and offline gameplay options” and allow users to play alone or “against friends and the whole world”. “It’s a sort of reimagining of previous draft modes we’ve had,” Groves added during the announcement, referring to past experiences such as the Fantasy Draft.

The draft’s predecessor formed the basis for the World Cup

This is precisely where the link to competitive play lies: during the inaugural World Championship in 2024, that very same Fantasy Draft was used in both the qualifying rounds and the knockout stages. In between, all qualifiers had to prove themselves in an offline league format to advance to the final round of the competition.

As Groves revealed, the new Shuffle Draft could encompass all these phases in a similar tournament format in future. This would allow for the creation of both league formats and cup-style knockout rounds.

SI remains tight-lipped and announces a “twist”

However, SI has not yet revealed exactly what options the mode will include or how it will work in detail. Groves noted that the studio intends to focus more attention on the Shuffle Draft “at a later date”, leaving open the question of whether it will be playable in the free pre-release version of FM27 for PC. This is due to be released on 29 October, ahead of the full launch on 10 November.

What is clear, however, is that Groves and Sports Interactive want to deliver the next surprise straight after this unexpected announcement. It’s hard to interpret the Senior Community Manager’s cryptic announcement any other way: “There’s a twist.”
