The Hamburg native will fight for the WBA title in Moscow. Will Germany soon have two heavyweight world champions?
Peter Kadiru is getting the chance of a lifetime: The Hamburg-based professional boxer will fight for the WBA heavyweight world title this coming Saturday in Moscow. His agency, Ringside Zone, made the surprise announcement on Monday. Southpaw Kadiru, who has won 23 of his 24 fights so far, will face Murat Gassiev in the biggest fight of his career to date. The Russian was originally scheduled to fight Tony Yoka, but the Frenchman had to withdraw due to injury.
“Of course, this fight is coming on short notice. But opportunities like this don’t happen according to plan in the heavyweight division. You have to be prepared when a world title fight opens up. Peter is ready,” said Florian Winter, founder and CEO of Ringside Zone.
If he wins, Kadiru would become Germany’s second reigning heavyweight world champion alongside Agit Kabayel. Nearly 100 years after Max Schmeling, Kabayel was most recently declared the WBC champion after Alexander Usyk vacated his belts. The Ukrainian also most recently held the IBF and WBA belts—which Kadiru is now fighting for.
