35,000 Germans want to go to the World Cup in Qatar

On Monday, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser will travel to Qatar to get a picture of the situation in the World Cup host country. FIFA has now announced that thousands of Germans have bought tickets.

Despite ongoing criticism of host Qatar, the German national team can look forward to the support of a large crowd of fans at the upcoming World Cup (20 November to 18 December). “We have the figures from FIFA, according to which 35,000 tickets have been sold to Germany,” DFB President Bernd Neuendorf told SWR radio on Wednesday.

On Monday, the head of the German Football Association (DFB) will travel to Qatar together with Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) to get a picture of the situation. Neuendorf will also talk to FIFA President Gianni Infantino on site. The DFB boss will again call for a compensation fund from the world governing body for the families of dead or injured World Cup workers.

“I have made my expectations clear to Gianni Infantino. FIFA has a responsibility – and it must live up to it,” said Neuendorf: “It is all the more regrettable that the fund has not yet been set up – and that there is no clear commitment to it. We will continue to demand this from FIFA.”

Neuendorf also wants to influence the Qatari government, especially with regard to the treatment of homosexuals. “The commitments have not been fulfilled to a sufficient degree so far,” the DFB boss said: “We will talk to the government about the safety of these people. “
