Zverev, Struff and Altmaier in round three in Madrid

Three German tennis players are showing good clay court form in Madrid. Alexander Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff and Daniel Altmaier are now fighting for a place in the round of 16 in Madrid

A German tennis trio led by Olympic champion Alexander Zverev has reached the third round of the Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid. Zverev didn’t show any weaknesses in his second round match against Croatian Borna Coric and won 6:3, 6:2. The 27-year-old will now face Denis Shapovalov from Canada in the battle for a place in the round of 16.

“I felt very good. I may have missed a few chances, but I’m still happy that I won in two sets,” said Zverev, who noted with regard to his next opponent: “With Shapovalov, it really depends on what condition he’s in. He is one of the most aggressive players on the tour.”

The number four seed Zverev has already won the clay court tournament in the Spanish capital twice (2018 and 2021) and has his highest win rate at a Masters 1000 tournament on the ATP Tour here with well over 80 percent

Struff and Altmaier also win clearly

Zverev’s Davis Cup teammates Daniel Altmaier and Jan-Lennard Struff also made it through to the round of 32. Buoyed by his first tournament win on the ATP Tour last weekend in Munich, Struff beat Jaume Munar from Spain 6:1, 7:5 with relative ease. One day after his 34th birthday, the Warstein native was particularly convincing in the first set. Struff will now face Frenchman Ugo Humbert and should have a good chance in his current form.

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old Altmaier won clearly against Frenchman Arthur Fils with 6:2, 6:3. Altmaier thus successfully took revenge at the clay court event for his defeat at the tournament in Barcelona last week. Altmaier only needed 78 minutes for his surprisingly clear success against the world number 32. The strong-serving Pole Hubert Hurkacz awaits in the next round
