Zverev storms into semi-final – now Djokovic awaits

Alexander Zverev has impressively underlined his rising form just before the US Open and is through to the semi-finals of the ATP Masters in Cincinnati.

Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev has impressively underlined his rising form shortly before the start of the US Open and has reached the semi-finals of the ATP Masters in Cincinnati. He defeated Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-2 in just 73 minutes. Zverev held his first serve and did not allow the 32nd-ranked player from Hamburg a single break chance.

On Sunday night, however, the world No. 17 will face a tough hurdle: Grand Slam record winner Novak Djokovic (No. 2), who gave US player Taylor Fritz no chance with a 6-0, 6-4 win. The second semi-final will be contested by world No. Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Hubert Hurkacz of Poland.

Zverev had won the hard-court tournament in Cincinnati in 2021, but missed last year due to the serious ankle injury he suffered against Rafael Nadal at the French Open. At the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year (28 August to 10 September), he is aiming for a good result – in 2020 he was only stopped in the final by his Austrian mate Dominic Thiem.

The best possible seed position could help Zverev in New York. And things continue to go up for the Hamburg player in the rankings. Even with a loss to Djokovic, he would move up to twelfth place next week, and with a tournament win Zverev’s return to the top ten would be perfect.
