Zverev marches into the next round

The Hamburg native remains undefeated at this year’s US Open.

Alexander Zverev reached the third round at the US Open in New York with a routine performance. The world number three won his match against Britain’s Jacob Fearnley 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 and will now face Félix Auger-Aliassime (Canada/No. 25) or Roman Safiullin from Russia.

After 2 hours and 28 minutes, Zverev converted his sixth match point at Louis Armstrong Stadium to reach the round of 32 at the US Open for the seventh consecutive time. Last year, the 2020 finalist was defeated in the quarterfinals by local hero Taylor Fritz. In the first round of this year’s tournament, the Hamburg native defeated Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, meaning he has yet to drop a set.

“He played incredible tennis at the end, scoring incredible points. I’m glad I was able to finish it in three sets,” said Zverev after his tour de force against Fearnley, who risked everything at the end: “There are no easy matches, you have to be fully focused from the first round.” When asked about the current dominance of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who are ahead of him in the rankings, he coolly replied: “I’m here to get the party started.”

Against Fearnley, who had made it into the main draw at the US Open for the first time, Zverev won the first and second sets after breaking early on in each set. Fearnley, ranked 60th in the world, repeatedly troubled the favorite, but he made too many unforced errors and ultimately lost his third meeting with the 2021 Olympic champion.
