Zverev has to pull out for Davis Cup relegation

Severe setback for the German tennis team: The team will be missing superstar Alexander Zverev in the Davis Cup relegation match.

The upcoming Davis Cup relegation match will be a difficult affair for the German tennis team. The reason: superstar Alexander Zverev has cancelled his participation. The world number ten is still suffering from a muscle injury in his left thigh. He suffered the injury during the quarter-finals of the US Open against Carlos Alcaraz.

Shortly after the injury, Zverev had already complained of a bump on his thigh. “Usually when you have a bump, it indicates that you have a tear,” said the 26-year-old from Hamburg.

Kohlmann on Zverev: “Would have liked to have had him there “

“Of course, Alexander’s absence weighs heavily because he has regained his old strength in recent weeks and is an absolutely exceptional player,” said Davis Cup team manager Michael Kohlmann. “Of course we would have liked him to be here for this important match, but I am convinced that we will be strong enough to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina without him.”

Former French Open round of 16 finalist Maximilian Marterer was nominated as a substitute for Zverev. The latter had reached the third round at Wimbledon as a qualifier. “I am sure that he will be an important support for us against Bosnia-Herzegovina,” Kohlmann said of the current 127th-ranked player in the world rankings.

The other German team members are Daniel Altmaier, Yannick Hanfmann and the doubles specialists Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz.
