The French Open begins in two weeks. Alexander Zverev is trying to find his form in Rome. So far, things are looking good.
Defending champion Alexander Zverev is in the round of 16 at the tennis tournament in Rome. The 28-year-old won his third-round match against Lithuanian qualifier Vilius Gaubas 6-4, 6-0, only encountering a few minor difficulties in the first set.
In the battle for a place in the quarterfinals, Zverev will now face France’s Arthur Fils at the Masters 1000 event, against whom he lost his last Masters 1000 match in three sets in Miami.
Zverev got off to a good start and broke early. But then the world number two had a few problems with his serve and lost it twice. However, Zverev found a way and took the first set after 55 minutes. That broke Gaubas’ resistance. Zverev now had an easy game and sealed his place in the next round after 1 hour and 25 minutes.
Sinner makes successful comeback
On Saturday, Jannik Sinner won his first match in Rome after a three-month doping ban. The world number one put in a solid performance to beat Argentine Mariano Navone 6-3, 6-4.
“It’s a great feeling. I’ve been waiting a long time to be back. I’m very happy,” said Sinner, who won the Australian Open in the final against Alexander Zverev at the start of the year. He then reached an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency and had to sit out for three months.
Sinner and Zverev are also considered favorites at the French Open. The second Grand Slam tournament of the season begins on May 25.
