Former Bundesliga player Steve von Bergen is leaving Young Boys Bern at his own request at the end of the season. As the club announced, Mathieu Beda will take over some of his duties from next season.
A club legend is leaving Bern. As the reigning Swiss champions announced on Wednesday, sporting director Steve von Bergen is leaving the club and allowing his contract to expire in the summer. The former Bundesliga player, who played 68 Bundesliga games for Hertha BSC between 2007 and 2010, cites personal reasons for his departure in a club statement.
“My family and YB are my great passions. But in my role as sports director, I had to realize that my family was increasingly neglected; I could no longer fulfill my role as a father as I see fit and feel is necessary.”
Von Bergen joined YB from Palermo in the summer of 2013 and quickly became a leader. One year later, van Bergen stepped down and became both co- and defensive coach in the youth sector and interim assistant coach of the professionals.
The now 41-year-old took over as sporting director in 2022 and subsequently shaped a successful era. Under his leadership, the club won the Swiss championship and the Swiss Cup twice. Accordingly, Young Boys Bern would have liked to have continued working with von Bergen, as the club announced.
Ex-Lautern player takes over
The departure of the sporting director has an impact on the future distribution of tasks at the Swiss Champions League participant. Some of the tasks will now be taken over by Mathieu Beda. The 43-year-old also looks back on a past in the Bundesliga, where he played for 1. FC Kaiserslautern and TSV 1860 Munich.
As reported by Bern, the Frenchman will be closely involved in contract and transfer matters and will also assist with squad planning. After his playing career, Bedia worked in various roles in European football. Among other things, he was the player agent for former Gladbach and Swiss international Denis Zakaria.
