Yakin calls up Jaquez for the Swiss national team for the first time

The Swiss national team has made a very convincing start to World Cup qualifying thanks to two home wins against Kosovo (4-0) and Slovenia (3-0). Now two challenging away games in Sweden (October 10) and Slovenia (October 13) .
Murat Yakin has announced the squad for these two matches, with the Swiss national team coach opting not to make any major experiments. However, two newcomers have made it into the squad: Luca Jaquez (VfB Stuttgart) and Adrian Bajrami (FC Lucerne). The two defenders have been called up to the senior national team for the first time and can hope to make their international debut in Sweden or Slovenia.

The 22-year-old Jaquez has established himself in defense at VfB Stuttgart and has played in four competitive games so far this season. Had he not suffered a broken nose at the start of the Bundesliga season, he might already have been a candidate for the national team at the start of the World Cup qualifiers. Ahead of Stuttgart’s away game in Basel on Thursday evening, Jaquez already stated that he would be “extremely” happy to receive a call from Yakin.

Adrian Bajrami, who took over from Jaquez in Lucerne this summer, has established himself as a regular at Lake Lucerne and recently emphasized that, despite playing a few friendly matches for Albania, he wants to play for Switzerland in the future. Now Yakin could tie him to Switzerland permanently if he plays him in Sweden or Slovenia.

Eight more players based in Germany in the squad

Midfielder Djibril Sow and striker Andi Zeqiri are back in the squad. Neither of them were involved in the World Cup qualifiers. Also from the Bundesliga are Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund), Nico Elvedi (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Miro Muheim (Hamburger SV), Isaac Schmidt (Werder Bremen), Silvan Widmer (Mainz 05), Johan Manzambi (SC Freiburg), and Fabian Rieder (FC Augsburg) have also been nominated, as has Cedric Itten from second division club Fortuna Düsseldorf.
