WWE icon facing sensational change?

Hall of Famer Edge’s WWE contract is coming to an end, he celebrated his temporary farewell on SmackDown. Is he now moving to AEW? There are also loud whispers within the scene.

Three and a half years ago he celebrated a sensational comeback in WWE. Will a similarly sensational, late new beginning now follow?

The – at least temporary – departure of legend Edge from the wrestling market leader has fuelled speculation that, in addition to a career end for the soon-to-be 50-year-old or an extension at WWE, a move to competitor AEW could follow.

The portal Fightful reports that “many” within AEW believe there is a “realistic possibility” of winning over Edge, who is still in top form.

Several months ago, confidants of the Hall of Famer had already expressed the opinion that he could end up with Tony Khan’s promotion, with whom he had already been negotiating before his WWE comeback.

Edge would meet old acquaintances and new constellations at AEW

A lot of friends and companions of the “Rated-R Superstar” are active at AEW: his long-time partner Christian Cage, who returned to the ring shortly after him, their old rivals Matt and Jeff Hardy, the soon to be 53 tireless Chris Jericho and last but not least the tag team champions FTR, with whom he and wife Beth Phoenix are personal friends.

In the Mixed Tag Team Match against Finn Balor and Rhea Ripley, Edge and Phoenix not coincidentally ended the match with the Shatter Machine, the finisher of Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler

Another detail fuelling the rumour mill: months ago, scene guru Dave Meltzer reported in his Wrestling Observer that Edge and Christian were interested in one last engagement together as partners.

This could take place at WWE when Cage lets his AEW contract, signed in 2021, expire – although the term is unknown. But also at AEW, where big marketable “Dream Matches” against FTR, the Young Bucks and other duos would be conceivable. In the singles area, too, there would be numerous new constellations with Champion MJF, Jon Moxley, Adam Cole, Kenny Omega, who is professedly held in high esteem by Edge, the young Cage pupil Jack Perry and many others.

Edge would have to change his name, which WWE has the rights to, if he made the switch.

Edge competed in his last WWE match for now on SmackDown

Edge had celebrated his 25th anniversary with WWE at the recent edition of the Friday Night SmackDown TV show in Toronto near his Canadian home – and competed against buddy Sheamus in the last match before his current contract expires.

Edge turned to the audience after the show and announced what initially sounded like a final goodbye: “Toronto: What can I say? This is the last time for me here in front of all of you. I don’t think I can get the forum to have a match here in front of you guys again, honestly.”

The one-time rival of megastar John Cena then refrained from announcing any certainties, however: “I don’t know what my future holds, I really don’t,” he said, “I’m going to sit down at the table with my family this week and lick my wounds and see what they want me to do. “

In an appearance for Canadian medium Sportsnet, Edge added the information that his WWE contract won’t expire until the end of September and he will use the time until then to regenerate. This rules out a flash debut for AEW at the All In mega-show in London on Sunday or at All Out the following week.
