Timo Werner has to leave the pitch injured in the cup game against the San Jose Earthquakes. It remains to be seen what happens next for the striker after treatment on his thigh.
Timo Werner was substituted early in his San Jose Earthquakes’ victory in the U.S. Open Cup. The 57-time international received treatment on his left thigh on the sidelines before he was unable to continue in the 34th minute. Werner cheered on his team’s first goal against Minnesota United, but the Earthquakes went on to win 4:2 in the last 16 of the cup competition.
Injury would come at an inopportune time for Werner
At first, there was no official information on how seriously Werner was injured. However, the 30-year-old was able to leave the pitch on his own. Applauded by the crowd at PayPal Park and visibly frustrated, Werner walked off the pitch and into the dressing room.
An injury would come at an inopportune time for Werner after his move from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig to the USA in the winter. The attacking player has put in a strong performance in California recently. With nine wins from their first ten league games of the season, the Earthquakes have recently set an MLS start record and are top of the Western Conference table. Werner has four goals and five assists in seven appearances.
Charlotte lost 2-0 to MLS rivals Atlanta United in the second round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, with the other games taking place this Wednesday. The defending champions are Nashville SC.
