World Championship bronze for Olympic heroine

Butkereit, silver medalist in Paris, fights her way to third place in Budapest via the consolation round.

Miriam Butkereit has won the second medal for the German Judo Federation (DJB) at the World Championships in Budapest. The Olympic silver medalist took bronze in the 70 kg class with a victory over Australia’s Aoife Coughlan. Mascha Ballhaus (52 kg) had already won the bronze medal on Saturday.

Butkereit (Halle) lost to the eventual winner Shiho Tanaka (Japan) in the quarterfinals, but defeated Elisavet Teltsidou (Greece) in the consolation round. In the following fight against Coughlan, the 31-year-old secured her first individual World Championship medal just under a year after her silver coup at the Summer Games in Paris.

On Wednesday, two-time European champion Alina Böhm will be the next medal hope for the DJB in the 78 kg class.

The title fights in Hungary will end on Friday. The individual competitions will be held until Thursday, with the mixed competition taking place on the final day.
