With an option for more: Flick confirms early contract extension in Barcelona

What Joan Laporta announced shortly after his re-election as president of FC Barcelona in mid-March is now all but a done deal. The contract with head coach Hansi Flick has been extended through 2028, the 61-year-old confirmed on Tuesday.

There was actually no great rush regarding the contract extension. Hansi Flick’s contract would have expired in the summer of 2027 anyway, but now the club and the coach have taken decisive action and extended the contract early by another year.

“We all intend to extend the contract. Hansi is also in favor of it,“ Laporta had already revealed on RAC1 back in March. ”I would be very happy if he stayed for the next five years. For now, we will extend his contract by another year. Because we always want him to work with one more year on his contract.“

”I am very grateful to the club that I am allowed to coach until 2028″

Official confirmation from the club was still pending on Tuesday, but Flick himself confirmed at a press conference that he would “sign a new contract with FC Barcelona.” “I am very grateful to the club for allowing me to coach until 2028,” said Flick, who also has the option to extend for another year. “If everything goes well, we’ll make the decision to extend for another year.” It had become clear to him in recent days “that I’m in the right place here.” Now the focus is on “continuing to win and trying again to win the Champions League.”

Flick joined the Catalans in the summer of 2024 as Xavi’s successor, along with his assistants Heiko Westermann and Marcus Sorg, and signed a contract through 2026. With Barcelona, he won the first seven league games in a row; ultimately, the 61-year-old secured the double of the league title and the cup. In the Champions League semifinals, Barcelona narrowly lost to Inter Milan in two spectacular matches. In May 2025, his contract was also extended by one year.

Will Flick even stay until 2031?

Barcelona remains the team to beat in Spain this season as well, having clinched the league title early thanks to a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid in El Clásico. In the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, Barcelona fell just short against Atlético Madrid in both competitions. Nevertheless, the former DFB coach, who had previously won the sextuple—including the Champions League title—with FC Bayern in 2020, was never criticized at Barcelona. Flick’s ultimate goal is to win the Champions League trophy with the Catalans as well.
