If Alexander Albon is to be believed, Williams should be able to compete for Formula 1 world championships again by 2030
According to Alexander Albon and James Vowles, Williams can dream of a world championship in 2030. “James is a realist, so he doesn’t try to build castles in the air,” explains the 30-year-old ahead of the Monaco weekend.
Specifically, this is in response to a question at the official press conference. After all, Team Principal Vowles recently emphasized that Williams should be competing for world championships starting in 2030. When asked whether this is a realistic goal, Albon replied:
“I think 2030 is [a realistic goal]. James is a realist, so he’s not trying to build castles in the air.”
“Of course, we’d be happy if it happened a bit sooner. We’ve certainly noticed that we’re a bit further back this year than we’d like. Maybe that’s set us back a step, but I still believe him when he says that.”
The following question from Sky UK commentator David Croft alludes to the length of Albon’s career. So far, Albon has competed in 95 races for Williams, making him the joint leader alongside Nigel Mansell. When asked if Albon could imagine another 95 Grand Prix weekends by 2030, the former Red Bull driver replied:
“Yes, absolutely. For me, it’s about progress. I want to see progress within the team. I think we’ve shown that over the past four years, because every year it’s gotten a little bit better and better.“
”This year we might be taking a step back in terms of performance, but I see changes within the team and it looks like we’re heading in the right direction.“
”I feel like I’ve been part of this team from the very beginning, even before [the signing of] James. I’ve put so much effort and work into [the team], so I’d love to see it through to the end.”
Albon has yet to win a Grand Prix, and so far only his teammate Carlos Sainz has secured podium finishes for Williams. The team currently sits in eighth place in the Constructors’ Championship.
