Despite the setback in the 2026 season, James Vowles believes he can lead Williams back to the top of Formula 1
James Vowles has stated that bringing the Grove-based team back to the top of Formula 1 will be his “life’s work.” Vowles took over as team principal at Williams in early 2023 and faced the immense challenge from the outset of modernizing the outdated infrastructure and restoring the team to its former world championship form.
On the team’s official “Torque” podcast, Vowles looked back on the long-term rebuilding process at Williams alongside Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz.
When asked by a fan how one builds resilience and mental strength in a team the size of Williams, Vowles replied: “There are so many difficult life experiences—as long as you approach them with the right attitude, you’ll ultimately emerge as a better person.”
“The second point is that I’m stubborn and persistent. We will reach the level we need to be at. That will be my life’s work,” said Vowles. And, referring to his drivers Sainz and Albon, he continued: “But it’s just as much your [responsibility], and the reality behind it is: That creates a strength that no one can break.”
Williams got off to a difficult start to the 2026 season. The team traveled to the test sessions in Bahrain with a car that was too heavy, having already missed the shakedown test in Barcelona. However, both Albon and Sainz extended their contracts ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix.
Vowles also addressed his two drivers’ commitment in the podcast: “Thank you to both of you. It will be an absolute honor to have you both by my side and as part of Williams next year—and hopefully for many, many years to come.”
Albon has extended his contract by one year through the end of 2027, while Sainz has signed a new multi-year contract.
