Dirk Nowitzki has kept his distance from the Dallas Mavericks in recent years. Under the new regime, however, the Hall of Famer could become more involved again, as the 48-year-old revealed in a recent interview.
It’s well known that Dirk Nowitzki wasn’t a big fan of former GM Nico Harrison, so his office as Special Advisor to the Dallas Mavericks usually stood empty. Now, things have changed in Texas—with Masai Ujiri as the new leader in Dallas, the situation looks a bit different.
“I’ve known Masai for a very long time,” Nowitzki said on the DLLS Mavs Podcast with insider Marc Stein. “We’ve already had a few conversations about what the future might look like, and of course he wants me to be on board.” Whether that will happen—and in what capacity—is still unclear, however.
At the same time, Nowitzki also has other commitments. The 48-year-old remains chairman of the FIBA Players’ Commission and is also entering his second season as a studio analyst for Prime Video, where he analyzes NBA games alongside Steve Nash, Blake Griffin, and Udonis Haslem.
Nowitzki Wants to Contribute More
That’s why Nowitzki stated that taking on a new role isn’t “urgent” at the moment. “I’m still a Maverick for life. I’d be happy to continue being involved and maybe even contribute more at some point. We’ll see what the future brings.”
Nowitzki spent 21 years as a player with the Mavericks before hanging up his sneakers in 2019. He remains friends with minority owner Mark Cuban, who brought the German back to the franchise as an advisor.
