Agit Kabayel will be rooting for Alexander Usyk in Saturday’s unification bout—in the hope of securing a world title shot of his own soon.
German heavyweight boxer Agit Kabayel has once again emphasized his world title ambitions. He will be rooting for triple champion Alexander Usyk in Saturday’s unification bout at Wembley.
“It would be a better starting position for me if Usyk wins, then I would be in contention for a world title shot,” the 32-year-old told sport.de.
Kabayel will be one of 90,000 spectators when the Ukrainian takes on British IBF world champion Daniel Dubois. If Dubois wins, there will be a rematch, and Kabayel, who was born in Leverkusen, will have to wait longer for a title fight.
“You can’t let yourself be fooled.”
“Of course, you go through a spectacle like this in your head. What would it be like against Usyk? What about against Dubois?” said Kabayel, who already has a recipe for a possible fight against Usyk: “You can’t let him fool you, you have to build up pressure round after round and eventually even Usyk will collapse. If I were in the ring with Usyk, I would know what to do.”
Kabayel has held the WBC interim world title since his knockout victory over China’s Zhilei Zhang last February. This entitles him to a shot at the world champion.
He believes that such a fight would also draw huge crowds in Germany. “I can definitely say that my promoter Frank Warren from Queensberry Promotion and my manager Spencer Brown are very interested in coming to Germany and making my dream of boxing in an arena in Germany come true. So that we can also revive boxing in Germany,” said Kabayel.
