Why Hülkenberg couldn’t drive in Audi’s debut

While teammate Gabriel Bortoleto scores points, Nico Hülkenberg is left standing on the sidelines in Audi’s debut: a technical problem stopped him before the start.

Formula 1 newcomer Audi is “not yet entirely sure” why Nico Hülkenberg was unable to compete in the 2026 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. The German rolled out in the Audi R26 on his way to the starting grid and subsequently spoke of a “technical problem that we couldn’t fix quickly enough.”

Audi team boss Jonathan Wheatley went into a little more detail after the race: “During the formation lap, we lost telemetry on Nico’s car. That means we were no longer receiving data from the car and didn’t know exactly what was happening.”

“We then decided to bring the car to its starting position and try to fix the problem there. But without telemetry, a lot of it is pure speculation,“ explains Wheatley.
The Audi team boss does not see any connection to the rollout of Hülkenberg’s teammate Gabriel Bortoleto in qualifying: ”I think these are two different problems – simply based on the way Nico described the incident.”

Hülkenberg now at a disadvantage in terms of experience

Either way, the Audi team ultimately failed to find a solution, which meant Hülkenberg was condemned to watching from the sidelines. For the Formula 1 veteran, this was “very unfortunate.”

Through no fault of his own, Hülkenberg has fallen behind in terms of experience—especially when it comes to race data and energy management under race conditions. “It’s obviously frustrating and bitter for the team. After what had been a positive weekend up to that point, it’s certainly not what anyone in the team wanted,” said Hülkenberg.

Sky expert Timo Glock can well understand this reaction: it is “a shame” for Hülkenberg to have missed out on the Grand Prix distance. “He wasn’t able to gain the experience of switching between attack mode and energy management during the race,” said Glock.

Team boss Wheatley apologizes to Hülkenberg

Wheatley is aware of the lack of racing experience. He said: “Personally, I would like to apologize to Nico for his car not being ready to start. Gabriel’s car, on the other hand, ran absolutely reliably throughout the weekend – and we scored points right away in our very first race.”

For Hülkenberg, that is the “positive aspect” of Audi’s debut in Formula 1: “Scoring points right away in the first race is definitely very positive. It’s a start. Of course, we now have an initial assessment of where we stand. We will continue to work from here.“

The motto for the next few days is ”keep your head down, stay focused, and work hard,“ said Hülkenberg. ”I think without the problem, it could have been a pretty good day for the team overall. But that’s part of racing. So let’s put it behind us and attack again next week.”
