Victory in Wolfsburg: Ice-cold Freiburg still unbeaten

SC Freiburg are still unbeaten after their visit to Wolfsburg. In the 2-0 win over the VfL, the decisive factor was the ice-cold way in which they made the most of their chances – and the VAR when they scored the opening goal.

After seven games in a row without a win, VfL Wolfsburg had to play the still unbeaten Freiburg. Mark van Bommel’s team, with Guilavogui and Paulo Otavio replacing Lukebakio (bench) and Roussillon (calf problems) after the 3-1 defeat in Salzburg, started with commitment and repeatedly attacked the visitors well. The first warning shot was taken by Nmecha with his heel (5th).

Freiburg rejoice with a delay

Freiburg, with Kübler replacing Sildillia in the 1:1 draw against RB Leipzig, did not allow themselves to be rattled, remained patient and created more periods of possession as the game wore on. In minute 27, the Breisgauers cheered, but only briefly. Grifo had pulled a free kick sharply in front of the goal and Lienhart overcame Casteels with his second shot. The referee team around Tobias Welz had initially ruled it offside, but after VAR intervention the goal counted after all.

Once again the VAR is called upon

Only four minutes later, video referee Sascha Stegemann was called upon again. Steffen cleared in front of Casteels and the keeper slid into Kübler offside the ball, Tobias Welz was asked into the review area and stuck to his original decision even after viewing the picture: no penalty.

After that, football was played again, especially Nmecha was extremely active, but remained luckless: First the striker missed from close range (35th), then he failed to hit the crossbar (36th). SC keeper Flekken only had to intervene seriously with Guilavogui (45.+1).

Freiburg reduced their attacking efforts more and more after the opening goal, but both Grifo (36th) and Schlotterbeck could have increased the lead (44th).

After the change of ends, Sport-Club pulled back even further and looked at what the Wolves had to offer. Even though van Bommel brought more offensive forces onto the pitch with the introduction of Philipp and Lukebakio, the actions in the final third were of manageable danger.

Freiburg ice cold

Freiburg showed how it can be done with their first real attack in the second half: Günter won the ball against Mbabu on the halfway line and immediately took off. In the middle, the captain served Höler ideally – 2:0 (68.).

The goal finally pulled the plug on the Wolves. VfL tried hard, but were far too harmless. Two shots by Lukebakio (77th, 81st) and a deflected one by Vranckx (88th) were the last attempts to prevent the defeat.

Both series hold – not a nice record game for Arnold

In the end, both series held, although Freiburg (still unbeaten) will be much happier about theirs than Wolfsburg (winless for eight games). For the new record player of the Wolves, Arnold (260 Bundesliga games), not a nice jubilee.

Wolfsburg’s next match is an away game at Leverkusen on Saturday (3.30 pm), while Freiburg play third division side Osnabrück in the DFB Cup on Tuesday (8.45 pm), before they face bottom side Fürth on Saturday (3.30 pm).
