Vermeij’s 50-yard dream goal: “In the end, it was planned, yes”

A week after the 0:6 defeat in Munich, SC Freiburg II made spectacular amends. In the 2-1 win against Waldhof Mannheim Striker Vincent Vermeij provided the emotional highlight shortly before the end.

Coach Stefan Leitl changed Spielvereinigung’s starting line-up in only one position after the 1-3 defeat at SC Freiburg, starting Christiansen instead of Viergever in defence.

Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner rotated in four positions after the late 2-1 win at Olympiakos Piraeus. Hinteregger, Durm, Kostic and Lindström moved into the first eleven in place of Hasebe, Barkok, Chandler and Lammers.

Fürth committed and present

Fürth were more present from the start and managed to shift the game into Frankfurt’s half for long stretches. Much of the play went through the right side and Leweling, who was active there. However, despite their committed performance, they did not create any compelling goal-scoring opportunities. The visitors disappointed all along the line in the first 45 minutes and did not manage to score a goal worth mentioning. They lacked structure and a clear line forward. Fürth at least did that better. Shortly before the break, after a move down the left, it was Hrgota who finished and just missed the goal (44th). The bottom line was that the home side still lacked accuracy – whether in finishing, the final pass or positioning.

Joker Rode stings

Eintracht came back on the pitch after the break like a changed team. From the start, the visitors were more determined and determined, even if they were still a bit disjointed in their attacking play. The first two goals were scored by Kostic (57th, 64th), shortly afterwards Toure (69th) just missed. Fürth now lacked some momentum and the more passive behaviour played into the guests’ hands. They did it better in puntco chances: After a wrong pass by Meyerhöfer in the build-up, Kamada switched quickly and sent Rode in front of the goal. The Joker converted with his fourth touch of the ball into the right corner (75th).

Pure drama: First Itten, then Borré

But Fürth did not give in and forced Trapp into a brilliant save. After a cross from Ittter, the keeper reacted brilliantly to Tillmann’s well-placed finish. But in injury time, he was also powerless: This time, Tillmann took a corner and Ilsanker was unfortunate enough to pass to a completely free Itten at the far post. The Fürth striker only had to push the ball over the line with his chest (90.+2). Thanks to the lucky punch, the second point of the season seemed to be perfect.

However, the drama was to get even more intense, because goals in injury time have recently become a speciality of Eintracht: Kostic chipped a cross that was still extended by Ndicka to the far post – Borré shocked the Ronhof (90.+4). Just like last weekend in the 1-1 draw against Leipzig and during the week in the 2-1 win in Piraeus, a goal at the end of regulation 90 minutes secured Eintracht important points.

Negative record for Fürth

Fürth must instead continue to wait for their first home win in the Bundesliga and set a new negative record with the defeat: No team in Bundesliga history had only one point on their account after eleven games.

Greuther Fürth continue their campaign after the international break on Saturday (20.11.) at Borussia Mönchengladbach at 3.30 pm, while Frankfurt take on SC Freiburg at the same time the following day.
