The national coach believes Laura Siegemund, Eva Lys, and Tatjana Maria are capable of winning in the first round.
Women’s national coach Torben Beltz is hoping for one or two positive surprises from the German pros ahead of the US Open. Laura Siegemund, said the former successful coach of Angelique Kerber in New York, could “beat many players if she is injury-free.” The 37-year-old, who caused a sensation at Wimbledon by reaching the quarterfinals, has “no easy draw” against seeded player Diana Schneider, but “like in London, she can annoy many players with her game.”
The national coach also thinks Eva Lys, who will face a qualifier in the first round (starting Sunday), has a good chance. “She played well in Cleveland and had two good wins,” said Beltz. Lys withdrew from her quarterfinal in Ohio due to minor physical discomfort. Nevertheless, Beltz believes the 23-year-old from Hamburg will “go into the first round fit.”
The experienced Tatjana Maria (38) has been drawn against the most prominent opponent in the first round, Greece’s Maria Sakkari. “Sakkari is always a good name, of course. She was once a top 10 player,” said Beltz: “But she’s not playing that well at the moment and Tatjana is actually in pretty good shape. I think she has a good chance of winning.”
