Unvaccinated Djokovic still hopeful of US Open start

Despite his lack of vaccination against the coronavirus, Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic still hopes to start at the US Open. The last Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season begins on 29 August in New York.

“I’m preparing as if I have permission to play while waiting to see if there is somehow room for me to travel to the US. Fingers crossed,” the Serb wrote on Twitter.

The 35-year-old is on the entry list for the tournament. However, the organisers have stressed that they respect the entry regulations of the USA regarding the corona virus. Whether Djokovic will be allowed to compete in Flushing Meadows is therefore still open. With a few exceptions, vaccination against the coronavirus is still a prerequisite for entering the country.

After winning his seventh title at the grass-court classic at Wimbledon, Djokovic had reiterated that he had no plans to be vaccinated against the virus and was hoping for an exemption. Djokovic has won a total of 21 Grand Slam tournaments and has won only one less title at the four major events than Spain’s Rafael Nadal.
