U 20 cracks Romania’s defensive bar – Wörns team wins 4:0

Four days after the 0:0 in Poland, the German U 20 team won 4:0 against Romanians, who were strongly defensive as expected, and is now four games in a row without defeat. A handball penalty converted by Nebel brought the breakthrough.

DFB coach Christian Wörns changed his starting line-up on seven positions compared to the 0:0 against Poland: Gebhardt replaced Atubolu in goal, Beifus was replaced by Atemona in defence, Tauer, Röhl and Weißhaupt played in midfield instead of Martel, Messeguem and Obuz, and Kehrer and Beier were replaced by Knauff and Jastremski.

The German team dominated most of the first half, but had a hard time against the Romanians’ compact defence. It took until the 22nd minute before the German team had a real chance to score: Weißhaupt looked for and found Beier, who only hit the outside of the net from close range and close to the left post.

It wasn’t until the 42nd minute that there was something like excitement in the Romanian penalty area again – and again Beier was the striker with the finish: Via Weißhaupt and Nebel, the leather landed with him in the five-metre area. But the Romanian keeper Hindrich was alert and prevented the team from falling behind.

After the break, it was the same picture: Germany was mainly on the ball, Romania stood deep and tried to prevent. This was only partially successful in the 59th minute when Dutu stopped a cross from Beier with his hand. Nebel then converted the penalty kick (60th).

Now the Romanians had to open up – and Germany was able to use the space well. Hindrich was able to clear the ball from Weißhaupt in the 70th minute, but three minutes later he had to make a save: Emilio Kehrer completed a pass from Asta. However, the Freiburg player was clearly offside when he received the ball, which remained undetected due to the lack of a video assistant (73rd).

Hindrich had to come off shortly afterwards. Germany kept the pressure on and had a few more chances. Two of them led to further goals: Schmidt headed in a corner from Nebel (85th) and Kehrer added his second goal after a pass from Obuz (87th).

In November, the Wörns team will play again in France (11 November) and against Portugal (15 November).
