Twice away without fans and a hefty fine: UEFA punishes Cologne severely

Cologne’s return to the European stage was overshadowed by serious riots in Nice. This now has not inconsiderable consequences.

On 8 September, there had been riots at Cologne’s guest game in Nice, which ultimately led to a total of 32 people being injured. At the 1:1, there was also the burning of pyrotechnics, the throwing of objects and disturbances by spectators. Disciplinary proceedings were initiated against both Cologne and Nice.

On Friday evening, UEFA announced its punishment and not only condemned the financially strapped 1. FC Köln to a hefty fine of 100,000 euros, the association also issued a ban according to which the Effzeh is not allowed to sell tickets for the next two away matches on the European stage.

This means that the Cologne club will not be allowed to sell tickets for the upcoming Conference League matches in Belgrade at FK Partizan on 13 October and two weeks later at 1. FC Slovacko in the Czech Republic, and must therefore expect less support from their own supporters.

Nice, meanwhile, will have to play their next home game behind closed doors.
