Transfer revolution is in the works

The major European leagues are on the verge of a transfer revolution. After the Premier League moved the transfer deadline forward to mid-August before the start of the season in 2018, the model is to be extended to as many associations as possible in 2025.

“We are in discussion with our clubs about whether we want to end the transfer period next summer before the Bundesliga’s first match day. To this end, we are in talks with the top European leagues to find a common solution,” Ansgar Schwenken, the DFL’s director of match operations and fans, said in response to an inquiry.

The Premier League has already made a decision to this effect, but does not want to implement it on its own this time. The DFL Football Commission also believes that shortening the transfer period makes sense. The regulation that players can only be signed until the start of the season is intended to increase the integrity and credibility of the competition.

According to research, positive signals are also coming from Italy, while Ligue 1 is still forming an opinion and La Liga is against it. In Spain, clubs can fulfill licensing requirements by selling players by the end of August.

For the 2nd division, the transfer deadline remains August 31

The new regulation is not to be implemented for the German 2nd division. The German second division is already starting the 2025/26 season on August 1 and also regularly benefits from players who are loaned out by the first division clubs to gain playing experience. This effect could then be even stronger.

The Bundesliga starts on August 22, Serie A a day later. The other three major leagues start a week earlier. In order to proceed consistently in at least four of the five leagues, the transfer deadline would have to be August 15.

The top five leagues had already agreed on a common regulation for the 2024/25 season, bringing the transfer deadline forward to August 30 in the summer and postponing it to February 3 in the winter. The extension is due to the fact that the group stage of the Champions League and the Europa League does not end until January 29/30 and the registration deadline for the knockout matches has been moved to February 3.

The national associations can set the transfer period themselves and do not even have to stick to their own agreements, as the example of Italy shows. The winter transfer window in Serie A is now only closing on February 4.

For the new Club World Cup from June 15 to July 13 in the United States, FIFA has scheduled an additional transfer window at the beginning of June. Here, too, the Spanish want to refuse – probably also because La Liga is at loggerheads with the clubs Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, who are committed to a Super League. The German Club World Cup participants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund do not have to fear something similar. “We plan to implement the option of introducing an additional transfer period from June 1 to 10,” announced Schwenken.
