Top German boxer dies at 43

The German former world champion Alesia Graf is dead. The former training partner of Regina Halmich was only 43 years old

The former German boxing world champion Alesia Graf has died at the age of 43. No details have yet been released as to the circumstances of her death.

Graf secured the GBU world title in 2006 and was also WIBF world champion two years later. “The Tiger” had 29 professional fights, 16 of which she won. Graf ended her career in 2019

Her former training partner Regina Halmich was devastated by the news: “I still can’t believe it. We had a great time together. Two women in a boxing domain among men. We trained together, laughed together and also did a lot outside of training,” she told Bild-Zeitung.

They always stuck together and supported each other, Halmich continued: “We were friends.”

Graf was born Alessja Klimowitsch in Belarus in 1980. She came to Germany 19 years later and took the name Graf after marrying in 2002. She was granted German citizenship in 2008.

She boxed for the Universum boxing stable in Hamburg under promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl and manager Peter Hanraths. The latter said to the Bild newspaper: “My deepest condolences to the family. Alesia was a really great woman, very diligent in training. She was very ambitious and strong-willed. Alongside Regina Halmich, she was one of our best women in boxing. “
