Title defended! Canelo with a lesson

Boxing world champion Saul Alvarez has impressively underlined his supremacy in the super middleweight division.

The 33-year-old Mexican, known on the scene only as “Canelo”, won unanimously on points against Jermell Charlo from the USA in Las Vegas on Sunday. Alvarez thus successfully defended the world titles of the WBO, WBC, WBA and IBF federations.

Alvarez scored the most effective blow with a combination of a punch to the temple followed by an uppercut in the seventh round. Charlo, undisputed world light-middleweight champion, sank to the floor. The two judges scored the fight 118-109 and 119-108.

“We were working to work the body,” Alvarez said, “We knew he was a great fighter.” The 33-year-old Charlo had fought at super-middleweight for the first time, but he never found his attacking rhythm. Alvarez set the pace and deservedly triumphed.
